This document outlines the core concepts of the L.O.R.T.E. (Levels of Response to Traumatic
Events) Model developed by Joyce Dixson Haskett. The model is designed to provide
caregivers, professionals, and family members with a framework for understanding and
effectively supporting children of incarcerated parents. Haskett draws on her personal
experience as an incarcerated mother to highlight the unique challenges faced by these
children and argues for a more unified and informed approach to their care, focusing on
understanding the trauma associated with parental incarceration and building resilience. The
L.O.R.T.E. Model identifies four key stages that children experience: The Event, Saturation,
Blaming, and Outcome. The overarching goal is to prevent intergenerational incarceration by
addressing the specific emotional and psychological needs of this vulnerable population.
